Households Study

We want to find better ways to detect, prevent, and treat the flu and other respiratory viruses. The Seattle Flu Household Study looks at how these viruses spread within households and families. It’s easy to join and participate in the study—you can even do it without leaving home. If you and your family live in Seattle with 1 or more children, your household may be eligible to participate. Throughout the 2020-2021 flu season, your family will fill out weekly surveys about cold- or flu-like symptoms you or your family members are experiencing. If someone in your household feels sick, you’ll send us swabs from your nose to be tested for flu, COVID-19, and other viruses.

Swabs will be tested in our lab, and we’ll notify you of the results through our secure portal. If a swab from someone in your household tests positive for COVID-19, you will be contacted by a researcher or a public health official.
